Why you should not live off smoothies alone

There is a strong trend right now for consuming / drinking smoothies and juicing as a meal. People are taking fruits and veggies and putting them into a blender to then drink them. Many people virtually live off smoothies and juices and tell stories of miraculous things happening to those who ‘juice’.

Despite the positive benefits of increasing one’s vegetables and fruits intake one should not forget that chewing has many great benefits for the body. Chewing vegetables during a meal will make one full (satiated) and leaves one less prone to eat overeat and/or consume energy dense food items.

Also many continue eating poorly and just add green juices to the diet. Would it not be better to learn properly how to eat your fruit and veg?

Do not misunderstand me: I like smoothies; I am just reacting to the “smoothies-will-cure-all-illness-talk” that I read about in glossy magazines, news stories and on Facebook.  Smoothies are not the cure all as there are negative effects of a high juice consumption.   1. Hi Dr. Anna – great article, and it actually goes nicely along with an article I wrote recently on my dental blog that juicing and “all-natural,” even “organic” juices can be just as bad as sodas for a couple reasons:
    1. Juicing removes all the texture from fruits and especially vegetables that actually have a cleansing action on the teeth that prevents build-up of plaque.
    2. Juicing also makes all of the sugars present immediately bioavailable to oral bacteria, especially S. Mutans, the primary bacteria involved in tooth decay.

      This is great! Thank you for the tip!

      Scandinavians often suffer from a genetic condition (up to ~20 % of the population) whereby the outer layer of the teeth fall off. In my and my daughter’s case this luckily only happened in our milk-teeth, but it has made me acutely aware of what-to-drink-when. Let us say that we only consume water between and with our meals and the rest is treats. What you write about in your article has been very central to us.
