There is a strong trend right now for consuming / drinking smoothies and juicing as a meal. People are taking fruits and veggies and putting them into a blender to then drink them. Many people virtually live off smoothies and juices and tell stories of miraculous things happening to those who ‘juice’.
Despite the positive benefits of increasing one’s vegetables and fruits intake one should not forget that chewing has many great benefits for the body. Chewing vegetables during a meal will make one full (satiated) and leaves one less prone to eat overeat and/or consume energy dense food items.
Also many continue eating poorly and just add green juices to the diet. Would it not be better to learn properly how to eat your fruit and veg?

Do not misunderstand me: I like smoothies; I am just reacting to the “smoothies-will-cure-all-illness-talk” that I read about in glossy magazines, news stories and on Facebook. Smoothies are not the cure all as there are negative effects of a high juice consumption. I can only recommend to read Dr. Charles Payet’s article on the effect on the teeth: Juicing, Fruit Juices, & Energy Drinks: Worse than Soda?
